The St. Joseph Banana and Crop Husbandry Project focuses on promoting sustainable farming practices for bananas and other crops within the community. The aim is to ensure food security, improve household incomes, and maintain soil health through responsible farming practices.

Attract and retain quality high paying customers

Use of Clean Planting Materials.
Farmers are encouraged to plant clean banana suckers and other crop planting materials that are free from pests and diseases. These are sourced from trusted and reliable input dealers to avoid introducing diseases into the gardens.
Proper Handling of Farm Tools. Proper cleaning and disinfection of tools like pangas (machetes), hoes, knives, and spray pumps before and after use.
Proper Post-Harvest Handling and Storage.After harvesting, produce such as bananas, cassava, and other crops are stored carefully to avoid damage from pests like rodents. Farmers are trained on proper storage facilities to maintain the quality and market value of their produce.
Good Agronomic Practices.Timely removal of ‘Mpumumpu’ (unnecessary suckers) in banana plantations to control diseases such as bacterial wilt and sigatoka.
